The Italian Wine Guide, Gambero Rosso, gave the 2018 “Origini” its prestigious “Tre Bicchieri” award.
Roberto Cantori is a young, first generation winemaker, from the Apiro sub-zone of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC. In total he farms just over 6 hectares and makes around 25,000 bottles. When he began his journey to start his own cellar, he had been told of a vineyard farmed by a man who all the locals thought was crazy. The man was farming his vineyards organically since the 1960's, had planted his vines both north and east facing, basically doing everything outside of the conventional wisdom. Roberto, wanting to farm organically and produce an elegant style of Verdicchio, sought out these vineyards. “Origini” has become one of the reference points for Verdicchio in the Marche. In fact, the Italian Wine Guide, Gambero Rosso, gave the 2018 “Origini” its prestigious “Tre Bicchieri” award, one of just 13 Verdicchio from the Marche to receive the award. The backbone of “Origini” are the 50 year-old vines, planted in calcareous soil, at an elevation of 450 meters above sea level. The grapes are hand harvested, and put into a refrigerated room to bring the temperature down to preserve freshness and acidity and the delicate aromas before pressing. Roberto uses a very gentle pneumatic press to extract the juice, and fermentation is started in stainless steel with a pied de cuve of natural yeast. Fresh notes of lemon and stone fruit can be found on the nose and palate. The wine has brilliant texture, similar to a Premier Cru Chablis. The combination of fruit, mineral, herbs, acidity and texture display a complexity rarely found in Verdicchio.
